The Fall 2008 Couture Shows

Fur coats, serious texture and heavy layering may be far from your mind as we enter the hottest days of the summer, but with the wrapping of the couture shows last week, the fashion industry is buzzing with the forecasting of winter 2008 trends.

Across the board, designers featured deep gem tones, textured and colored tights, long coats and fur in neutral grays, blacks, and browns. Dior took a modern approach to women's skirt suits updating them with new colors and higher waistlines. Armani Prive did the same with women's pantsuits, playing off menswear and introducing a high waisted pant that just barely hits at the ankle.

Christian LaCroix, who always keeps us guessing with his limitless creativity, showed a line that features a fashionable take on the prep school look, blazers, skirts, etc., which will definitely be a style to watch for this winter.

Givenchy and Jean Paul Gaultier showed collections that featured dark winter colors and fur jackets. Givenchy paired knee high boots with several of their looks and innovative ideas for winter layering.

Elie Saab, one of our personal favorites, showed breathtaking floor length gowns that seem meant for the red carpet. Valentino's collection featured both long and short dresses and played with lighter colors and vibrant reds, in keeping with the classic look of the fashion house.

Dior and LaCroix both showed to die for heels that we're sure fahsionistas will be all over when they hit stores. We're talking so fabulous they put the Dior heeled gladiators of the summer - a la Carrie Bradshaw - to shame.

Hot This Month: White Dresses

As we transition into the hottest summer months, celebrities and fashionistas are keeping cool and looking chic in white dresses. Although white isn't exactly known for its slimming qualities, when paired with the right accessories or cinched at the waist with a belt the white dress can be very flattering. An all white ensemble looks best when worn with a splash of color, maybe a detail in the dress or even a brightly colored handbag.

This July, fashion A-Listers, like Nicky Hilton and Halle Berry, have been seen sporting this summer trend during casual daytime events. Camilla Belle wore a very grown up and dressy version of the white dress backstage at Valentino's recent Haute Couture show in Paris. Anne Hathaway wore white to the Rome premiere of Get Smart. Estee Lauder spokeswoman Gwyneth Paltrow rang the New York Stock Exchange bell while looking flawless in a white Giambattista Valli dress.

We loved the Givenchy open toe ankle booties that singer Cassie paired with her white Pencey Cumberband Dress in NYC.

Whether you choose to dress up in white or play it casual with a sundress, we love the limitless accessory combinations. With a million ways to wear this trend, white dresses are here to stay this summer.

Summer Trend Alert: Scarves

Summer scarves are the “it” item of the season. Fashionistas and celebrities from New York to Los Angeles have been seen rocking this ubiquitous trend all summer long. The summer scarf can make any casual outfit instantly look put together and fashion forward. With so many different styles and ways to wear them, lightweight scarves seem to be the perfect summer accessory.

New mom Nicole Richie pairs hers with a Gucci diaper bag while on a Starbucks run in Los Angeles. It seems like Lindsay Lohan is hardly ever without a scarf around her neck, usually by celebrity favorite: Love Quotes. Jessica Alba pulled her summer outfit together with the Honeycomb Scarf by Tolani.

We love the fact that scarves can be used to dress an outfit up or down and go with anything because there are millions of patterns, sizes and colors to choose from. Here are a couple of our favorites that are sure to fit into anyone's budget.

Valentino's New Bag Collection

Since Valentino Garavani's retirement following the couture shows in January 2008, the fashion world has been stewing over the fate of the house that is now in the hands of successor Alessandra Facchinetti. Facchinetti's ready to wear collection was met with mixed reviews that are almost inevitable when taking over creative control for such an established fashion house and iconic designer.

For Valentino, however, handbags have made the transition flawlessly. The patent nuage bag has been toted all over Hollywood this summer. Lauren Conrad has been spotted with hers on several occasions and Nicky Hilton been seen carrying the bag in two different colors.

Much like this summer's it bag, the fall 2008-2009 handbag collection which is designed by Facchinetti is seriously swoon worthy. Valentino's new ad campaign prominently features the jardin rose framed duffel, taffeta rosier tote and our favorite the petale dome bag, all sure to be seen on the arms of Hollywood starlets as we transition into the fall.

We are holding our breath for Facchinetti's first haute couture presentation that will be hitting the Parisian runways on July 2nd.

Fashion Muse: Margherita Missoni

Fashion and glamor seep from every one of this girl’s pores. Being heir and muse to the Missoni empire suits Margherita well. She is both face and ambassador for the Missoni label. She can often be found with couture designers as well as Vogue editors and is observably almost always wearing Missoni.

This fashion inspiration grew up in the Italian countryside, spending weekends in Milan. She studied philosophy at Columbia University for a while, but struggled after moving to New York when her academic credits could not transfer to the United States educational system. Following the hurdle, Missoni chose to explore her love of theater. Currently, she is still studying acting in NYC and acting as a diplomat to the Missoni thrown.

Fashion wise, Missoni is on point. Whether she has help from a stylist (or several…she could afford it), this girl always looks effortlessly together at red carpet events, fund raisers and shows.

Vogue Italia Features Black Models

The July issue of Italian Vogue will focus on the beauty of black women. Every feature topic is related to black women in the arts and entertainment and all photographs are of black models. The issue’s theme and photographs were produced by Steven Meisel who is best known for his provocative photographs in Madonna’s book titled “Sex”, published in 1992.

Italian Vogue’s editor, Franca Sozzani, has gained a reputation for her appreciation of ideas and the arts, as opposed to commerce like most of her peers. Another notable characteristic of this cutting edge fashion editor is that controversy has never been a phobia of hers.

Featured in the issue are models Iman, Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Jourdan Dunn, Liya Kebede, Alek Wek, Pat Cleveland and Karen Alexander. Also hired is Toccara Jones, a full-figure model, who became known from “America’s Next Top Model.”

DVF’s Italian Garden Show

Wednesday night Diane Von Furstenberg presented her first European show at Giardino Torrigiani, Florence’s largest private gardens. The 14-acre estate includes an English garden, Baroque sculptures, citrus groves and portions of the original Medici walls. The designer was invited to show here by Pitti Immagine, the organizers of the international men's wear showcase.

The show was staged on four raised Astroturf catwalks which spread out from a giant center statue. According to Women’s Wear Daily, Von Furstenberg focused on suitcase-friendly pieces. "When you figure out your suitcase, you figure out your life," said von Furstenberg. "Since I pack every five days, I wanted to focus on seasonless and stand-alone pieces."

Passport pages, hotel key rooms and gondolier hats were printed on jersey and cotton dresses. The collection also included dresses made from scarves in bright colors and trench coat styles were cinched at the waist. The show’s final piece was worn by model Natalia Vodianova. The white, red and blue shift dress with "Bon Voyage" splattered across the front mimicked the show’s jetset theme.

Fashion Designer Quick Facts

Former Austro-Italian princess Diane von Fürstenberg was born Diane Halfin on December 31, 1945 in Brussels, Belgium. Her Greek mother, Liliane Nahmias, was a Holocaust survivor. Fürstenberg became a fashion icon in the 70s when she created the “wrap dress”. Samples hang at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Institute. The design became popular due to its revolutionary versatility: its dual status as comfortable business wear and elegant evening dress.

Fashion Acknowledges Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama attended a sold out fund raiser on Tuesday night which was held in her honor. The reception was held at the stylish Sikkema Jenkins & Co. gallery in Chelsea. She arrived only minutes after hosts André Leon Talley, Anna Wintour and Shelby Bryan. The fourth host, Calvin Klein, arrived a few minutes later.

After a meet-and-greet, Talley introduced Obama as a close friend to guests, which included Catherine Malandrino, Erin Fetherston, Cynthia Rowley, Lisa Airan, Thakoon Panichgul, Ralph Rucci, Julie Gilhart, Amanda Brooks, Iman, Chris Benz, Tory Burch, LL Cool J, LeBron James and Yigal Azrouël. The festive cocktail party cost up from $1,000 to attend. Guests ranging from models to musicians paid $10,000 to enjoy the private dinner afterward which was held at Calvin Klein’s residence.

Certain attendees mixed their support with personal fashion by wearing politically charged shirts and pins. Zac Posen wore a "Yes, we can" T-shirt of Barack Obama's face under his suit. Lauren Santo Domingo fastened an Obama pin to her Oscar de la Renta dress and clutch.

During a speech which lasted around 20 minutes, Obama spoke about meeting her husband while working at a law firm in Chicago. She also shared her and her husband’s ideals on making America a better country.

The dinner ended early, around 10 p.m. Obama needed to rest before her appearance on "The View" Wednesday morning.

Women Who Rock

Throughout the past couple of years we’ve attributed trend setting to the fashion elite. However, it’s not too shocking to see many of these looks have been around for a while. Most of today’s trends can even be traced back to musical legends from previous decades.

1. Both as a solo artist and with the Eurythmics, Annie Lennox has sold over 80 million records. It’s no wonder resourceful model and current “it girl” Agyness Deyn has recreated for herself Lennox’s classic rocker-chic look with a modern twist. Here Deyn can be seen with her signature platinum, choppy ‘do, not unlike miss Lennox’s. Deyn’s studded leather vest also reminds us of an outfit Lennox rocked (literally) while on tour.

2. Janis Joplin took the late 1960s by storm with her confident demeanor and honest lyrics. Along with Joplin, the late 60s brought hippie style including long natural hair, loose fitting tanks, long beaded necklaces and layered bracelets. Lindsay Lohan is one actress who frequently sports Joplin’s laidback bohemian style.

3. Not only did Billie Holiday set several standards for jazz vocals, but her classic style also left a footprint on history. Holiday wears a large flower behind her ear in most photos taken of her. Due to its versatility, this is a trend has remained strong through the ages. A flower hair adornment is great for anything from awards ceremonies to bonfires at the beach. Here Rachel McAdams has tied several deep French braids back with a magenta flower clip.

4. Chrissie Hyde’s raw talent and style has left a mark in our memories. She is best known as the leader of the band The Pretenders. Hyde is also a role model for animal friendly fashion as an intense advocate for PETA. Hyde has sported several trends that are still current, but one in particular caught our eye. The vest-tie combo has been everywhere for the past few years from Kate Moss (as seen here) to Hallie Barrie and Jennifer Lopez.

5. Debbie Harry made a point to prove punk blondes have more fun. She is known for her micro-mini Sid-Vicious skirts, shredded tops, untamed stage moves and edgy sneer. As the face and voice of Blondie, she merged the raw, dirty-on-purpose glory days of punk into the clean angles of emerging new wave pop. Following suit is Gwen Stefani, once lead singer of the band No Doubt and recent solo artist. Here Stefani can be found in a black and white striped dress and bright red lipstick, similar to Harry’s punk/pop style.

6. Tina Turner and Beyonce Knowles have a lot more in common than their performance together at the 2008 Grammies. Their battles to stardom, solo artist mentality, charisma and show stopping vocals are a few of them. Above, Tina Turner is dressed in a shimmering, silver dress which shows off her great legs. Beyoncé Knowles wears a similar outfit during a recent performance.

Chic & Healthy Summer Hair

It isn't easy getting hair to cooperate in the summer heat and humidity. Here is some advice for keeping your hair chic and healthy throughout the summer months

Healthy Hair Tips
1. Rinse your hair immediately when coming back from the pool or beach to reduce chlorine damage.
2. Get your hair cut every six to eight weeks to keep in healthy and smooth. If you use hair color, get your roots touched up too.
3. Don't shampoo daily. Over-shampooing can strip your hair of its natural oils. If possible, shampoo your hair every other day.
4. Blot dry instead of blow dry. If you aren't in a hurry, avoid the blow dryer and blot dry you hair instead. Don't rub, which can cause damage.
5. Always remember to protect your hair from the sun and chlorine. Wear a scarf or wear a protective spray with SPF. Redken has a great line of products to help combat UV damage (UV Rescue by Redken). These products will keep your hair safe if you want to wear it down when you are in the sun.

Key Summer Styles
#1 The Bedroom Look: The key to this look is separating the hair in large portions when curling - you want waves, not curls. People with curly hair should use big brushes and Velcro rollers. Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Biel are among the stars who fancy this look. The idea is to get a messy, tousled, sexy look.

For straight-to-wavy hair: Use a curling iron and curl your entire head, beginning with the bottom of your head and working your way up. Flip your head over and blow cool air over your hair. The curls should look more like waves. Make sure your hair has waves and bends in it.

If you have very curly hair: Use large Velcro rollers or use a large round brush to blow out the curls and make them into waves. Those with straight hair can curl with a curling iron, but the key is to curl or make it into a wave using large sections of hair. That way, your hair will be more wavy and less curly.

#2 The Greek Goddess Look: For this, you must use a curling iron. Hair with this look can be in a ponytail or bun. The idea here is to get the "natural curl" look. Blow your hair dry or use a diffuser. Use a small curling iron, around 1/2 inch, only on the ends of your hair. Try to get some spiral curls. Choose the curling iron that's best for you, depending on the kind of curls you want. The larger the iron, the bigger the curls you'll get.

For the best curls, make sure the wire of the curling iron is always facing the ceiling. When all your hair is set, put it in a ponytail, keeping the top loose. Let some curls fall toward the front of your face. These curls are much tighter and more controlled than the curls and waves used with the bedroom hair. You can put it in a ponytail or bun.

#3 The Bohemian Braid: Mix braids in with your hair down like Lauren Conrad or up like Sienna Miller and Ashley Olsen. You can do this with straight or curly hair. You can also mix braids with a pony tail. For a more natural look like Sienna’s, let hair air dry with a little Frizz-Ease to prevent fly-aways. Then, starting at a deep part by your ear, French braid a two inch band across the top of your head. If you can’t do this after trying a couple times: ask a friend. A simple alternative is to do a long braid next to your ear and pin it over your head.

Convertible Clutches

Convertible clutches were a huge hit last fall/winter and are still popping up everywhere. Their extreme convenience and elaborate yet simple designs ensure their continuity as a fashion staple in our wardrobes. Beyonce Knowles was seen stepping out of Paris restaurant L'Ombres clutching her colorful Fendi convertible bag last December. Gwen Stefani totes the L.A.M.B. convertible clutch she designed, 24/7. The fashion forward Victoria Beckham has been seen with Jimmy Choo’s version of the convertible as well.

Steal Her Style: Nicole Richie

Now that Nicole Richie has joined the momma club, she’s been quoted saying that she’s “ready to move on from her days as a wild child.” Regardless, Richie has been accredited for popularizing bad-girl-chic and setting the wheels in motion for a number of trends including head scarves, pregnancy fashion, animals as accessories and big sunglasses.

Richie is no newb to the fashion world. She received the Young Hollywood's Style Icon award from Hollywood Life magazine in 2005 and is known for topping best-dressed lists. She has also modeled for Bongo Jeans and Jimmy Choo.

In April 2007, Richie announced plans to start a jewelry, accessories, and sunglasses line as well as a perfume and style book. Her jewelry line, dubbed House of Harlow, will be out in late August 2008.

Isaac Mizrahi Resort 2009

Color was the name of the game in Isaac Mizrahi's 2009 Resort collection. The bright citrus and blue hues were some of our favorites, great for brightening up almost any summer occasion.

Mizrahi's looks were nearly all high-waisted or belted, two trends that are clearly going to be sticking around for a while. We especially loved his shirt and skirt combos as well as the belts they were paired with.

Our favorite looks of the collection included a white high waisted skirt, belted with a blue ruffled oxford and a to die for floor length gray dress with bright pink and yellow flower embellishments.

The Olsens Are At It Again

Fashion phenoms Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are at it again. This time they are expanding their high end clothing line Elizabeth and James to include a collection of jewelry, collaborating with 2007 CFDA Lifetime Achievement award winner Robert Lee Morris.

As a jewelry designer and sculptor, Morris has serious credibility in the fashion world. His work has been featured in the pages of Vogue since the mid-1970s, and during his career he has collaborated with the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Michael Kors to name a few. Adding MK and Ash to his repertoire seems like a match made in fashion heaven. Dubbed Robert Morris for Elizabeth and James, pieces from the line are rumored to be edgy, including dagger necklaces, silver and brass earrings and huge knuckle rings. From a designer that has previously drawn inspiration from Andy Warhol we expect nothing less than serious high fashion fabulousness.

Liz was lucky enough to meet the fab duo at Balenciaga spring/summer 2007, where she took this picture of them backstage once the show wrapped up.

The collection will eventually be available on Morris's self named website.

Stella McCartney Spring 2009

Yesterday, fashion designer Stella McCartney presented her spring 2009 collection in Jefferson Market Garden, Greenwich Village. The park’s laid back atmosphere and bright florals complimented McCartney’s carefree style flawlessly.

McCartney’s long time friend Kate Hudson managed to squeeze away from filming Bride Wars and stop by. It’s been reported that the red heeled clad vixen has recently been seeing Lance Armstrong.

Fashion models Lekeliene Strange, Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman showed off McCartney clothing in laced up pumps, gladiator heels and point-toe pumps. The collection’s colors range from flattering neutrals to the occasional pop of red and bright pink. Long tailored blazers were paired with oxfords or tees and loose charmeuse tops were cinched in with satin belts. Our two favorite dresses are the navy printed shirt dress and the bright red neck-tie dress.

Judi Lambert for Karta

This summer we can't get enough of the shift dresses that designer Judi Lambert has put together for Karta.

The dresses are a perfect mixture of retro style and modern glam. The classic shapes and vintage patterns paired with jeweled appliqué necklines seem to be a perfect match.

Fashion heavyweights Mischa Barton and Nicky Hilton have both been spotted out and about in dresses from the line. Barton wore the hex print drop waist dress during fashion week in Milan and Hilton brought a little bit of sparkly chic to her look with Karta's black jeweled shift dress.

Karta's frocks are the perfect solution to a last minute night out, the jeweled neckline provides all the accessories you'll need. Add heels and your ready to go.

On a more serious note, it was reported that all had Yves Saint Laurent on their minds at the New York Public Library Monday night. Saint Laurent had died the previous day at age 71 from brain cancer.

Marc Jacobs, nominated in two categories this year, said his fluttery heart dress worn by Victoria Beckham that night was an homage to Saint Laurent. Naomi Campbell alsowore vintage YSL in the couturier's honor.

The Awards
Fransisco Costa of Calvin Klein took home the Womenswear Designer of the Year award. This is the second time the designer has won the most prestigious award in the U.S. fashion industry. The first time he won was in 2006.

Tom Ford received the top award for menswear, while Tory Burch won for accessory design. "To be recognized is surreal, especially alongside Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors," said Burch in her acceptance speech. Jacobs and Kors were also nominated.

The Swarovski-sponsored awards for the three top newcomers in the same categories included Kate and Laura Mulleavy for Rodarte in womenswear, Scott Sternberg for Band of Outsiders in menswear and Philip Crangi for accessory design.

Yves Saint Laurent Dies at Age 71

PARIS - Legendary designer Yves Saint Laurent, died Sunday evening after a yearlong battle with brain cancer. He was 71.

A towering figure of 20th century fashion, Saint Laurent was widely considered the last of a generation that included Christian Dior and Coco Chanel and made Paris the fashion capital of the world, with the Rive Gauche, or Left Bank, as its elegant headquarters.

In the fast-changing world of haute couture, Saint Laurent was hailed as the most influential and enduring designer of his time. From the first YSL tuxedo and his trim pantsuits to see-through blouses, safari jackets and glamorous gowns, Saint Laurent created instant classics that remain stylish decades later.

When the designer announced his retirement in 2002 at age 65 and the closure of the Paris-based haute couture house he had founded 40 years earlier, it was mourned in the fashion world as the end of an era. His ready-to-wear label, Rive Gauche, which was sold to Gucci in 1999, still has boutiques around the world.

Saint Laurent first emerged as a promising designer at the age of 17, winning first prize in a contest sponsored by the International Wool Secretariat for a cocktail dress design. A year later in 1954, he enrolled at the Chambre Syndicale school of haute couture, but student life lasted only three months. He was introduced to Christian Dior, then regarded as the greatest creator of his day, and Dior was so impressed with Saint Laurent's talent that he hired him on the spot.

When Dior died suddenly in 1957, Saint Laurent was named head of the House of Dior at the age of 21. The next year, his first solo collection for Dior — the "trapeze" line — launched Saint Laurent's stardom. The trapeze dress — with its narrow shoulders and wide, swinging skirt — was a hit, and a breath of fresh air after years of constructed clothing, tight waists and girdles.

In 1960, Saint Laurent was drafted into military service — an experience that shattered the delicate designer, who by the end of the year was given a medical discharge for nervous depression.

Pierre Berge, the designer’s longtime business partner and former romantic parter, has said that Saint Laurent's gift to fashion was that he empowered women after Chanel had freed them.

Nowhere was Saint Laurent's gift more evident than the valedictory fashion show that marked his retirement in January 2002.
Forty years of fashion were paraded in a 300-piece retrospective that blurred the boundaries of time, mixing his creations of yesterday and today in one stunning tribute to the endurance of Saint Laurent's style. He also designed costumes for theater and film. There was the simple navy blue pea coat over white pants, which the designer first showed in 1962 when he opened his couture house and kept as one of his hallmarks.

His "smoking," or tuxedo jacket, of 1966 remade the tux as a high fashion statement for both sexes. It remained the designer's trademark item and was updated yearly until he retired.

Also from the 60s came Beatnik chic — a black leather jacket and knit turtleneck with high boots — and sleek pantsuits that underlined Saint Laurent's statement on equality of the sexes. He showed that women could wear "men's clothes," which when tailored to the female form became an emblem of elegant femininity.

"More than any other designer since Chanel, YSL represented Paris as the style leader," The Independent of London wrote in an editorial after Saint Laurent's retirement. "By putting a woman in a man's tuxedo, he changed fashion forever, in a style that never dated."

In his own words, Saint Laurent said he felt "fashion was not only supposed to make women beautiful, but to reassure them, to give them confidence, to allow them to come to terms with themselves."

Some of his revolutionary style was met with resistance. There are famous stories of women wearing Saint Laurent pantsuits who were turned away from hotels and restaurants in London and New York.

Saint Laurent's rising star was eternalized in 1983, when the Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted a show to his work, the first ever to a living designer. Subsequent shows at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and in Beijing made him a French national treasure, and he was awarded the Legion d'Honneur in 1985.

In 1999, Saint Laurent sold the rights of his label to Gucci Group NV, ceding control of his Rive Gauche collection, fragrances, cosmetics and accessories for $70 million cash and royalties. Industry insiders cited friction between Saint Laurent and Gucci's creative director, Tom Ford, as a likely factor in the fashion guru's decision to retire three years later. Ford stepped down in 2003.

When he bowed out of fashion in 2002, Saint Laurent spoke of his battles with depression, drugs and loneliness, though he gave no indication that those problems were directly tied to his decision to stop working. "I've known fear and terrible solitude," he said. "Tranquilizers and drugs, those phony friends. The prison of depression and hospitals. I've emerged from all this, dazzled but sober."

Summer Trend Alert: Studs

We've been seeing leather with studded detail everywhere since Mary Kate Olsen rocked a fabulous Givenchy jacket while in Paris during the autumn/winter 2008 shows. But you should know studded accents are still relevant and chic in a summer wardrobe.

The Sex and the City movie is a clear indicator that as far as this summer goes, studded detail is here to stay. Über-stylist Patricia Field pairs a two inch studded vintage belt over nearly every frock worn by Miss Fashionista herself, Carrie Bradshaw.

Studs can be updated with your summer wardrobe by incorporating bright colors or even girly basics like the hot pink dress and pearls that Sarah Jessica Parker pulls off so effortlessly. Brightly colored bags with studded detail are another great way to keep the trend current with the rest of your summer wardrobe. It seems this season, its all about adding a little edge to your summer look.

Fashion Designer Spotlight: Rachel Pally

We love Pally's fluid, figure-flattering frocks. Sorry about the alliteration, but it was begging to be said. But seriously, she has an incredible knack for transforming jersey into sophisticated and luxurious looks. It’s no wonder muses like Cameron Diaz, Jessica Alba, Oprah, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tyra Banks and Angelina Jolie have been spotted in Pally items. Her dresses are also perfect for easy day to night/pool to dinner ensemble transformations. This is why we love her, quick dress changes are a godsend. Act quickly though, because style mavens from L.A. to N.Y. are quickly snapping up her most desirable frocks like the #1 Long Poolside Dress, #2 Scarf Top and #3 Fiji Bikini, pictured above.
