Women Who Rock

Throughout the past couple of years we’ve attributed trend setting to the fashion elite. However, it’s not too shocking to see many of these looks have been around for a while. Most of today’s trends can even be traced back to musical legends from previous decades.

1. Both as a solo artist and with the Eurythmics, Annie Lennox has sold over 80 million records. It’s no wonder resourceful model and current “it girl” Agyness Deyn has recreated for herself Lennox’s classic rocker-chic look with a modern twist. Here Deyn can be seen with her signature platinum, choppy ‘do, not unlike miss Lennox’s. Deyn’s studded leather vest also reminds us of an outfit Lennox rocked (literally) while on tour.

2. Janis Joplin took the late 1960s by storm with her confident demeanor and honest lyrics. Along with Joplin, the late 60s brought hippie style including long natural hair, loose fitting tanks, long beaded necklaces and layered bracelets. Lindsay Lohan is one actress who frequently sports Joplin’s laidback bohemian style.

3. Not only did Billie Holiday set several standards for jazz vocals, but her classic style also left a footprint on history. Holiday wears a large flower behind her ear in most photos taken of her. Due to its versatility, this is a trend has remained strong through the ages. A flower hair adornment is great for anything from awards ceremonies to bonfires at the beach. Here Rachel McAdams has tied several deep French braids back with a magenta flower clip.

4. Chrissie Hyde’s raw talent and style has left a mark in our memories. She is best known as the leader of the band The Pretenders. Hyde is also a role model for animal friendly fashion as an intense advocate for PETA. Hyde has sported several trends that are still current, but one in particular caught our eye. The vest-tie combo has been everywhere for the past few years from Kate Moss (as seen here) to Hallie Barrie and Jennifer Lopez.

5. Debbie Harry made a point to prove punk blondes have more fun. She is known for her micro-mini Sid-Vicious skirts, shredded tops, untamed stage moves and edgy sneer. As the face and voice of Blondie, she merged the raw, dirty-on-purpose glory days of punk into the clean angles of emerging new wave pop. Following suit is Gwen Stefani, once lead singer of the band No Doubt and recent solo artist. Here Stefani can be found in a black and white striped dress and bright red lipstick, similar to Harry’s punk/pop style.

6. Tina Turner and Beyonce Knowles have a lot more in common than their performance together at the 2008 Grammies. Their battles to stardom, solo artist mentality, charisma and show stopping vocals are a few of them. Above, Tina Turner is dressed in a shimmering, silver dress which shows off her great legs. Beyoncé Knowles wears a similar outfit during a recent performance.
